Pine ↟
Pine is a lightweight photo-sharing app designed to reduce the noise and distraction of traditional social platforms. It keeps photos front and center while de-emphasizing social features such as likes and comments.
Users create and follow public or private collections, so they only see the content they care about. There are no public follower counts, recommendations, ads, stories, algorithms, or filters. Chronological photo sharing, the way it should be.
Background
I designed this app in collaboration with a couple of engineer friends in the Summer of 2022. In contrast to the nonstop ads and algorithms of Instagram, we wanted to create our own photo sharing app that distilled the experience down to it’s simplest form.
Requirements
Quick and easy onboarding. In later versions, a continuous guest flow that would eventually lead to a yearly subscription service.
Simple collection creation and curation. This would be the central value prop of the app. A place to keep and share your collections.
Robust flagging and moderation. We wanted our users to feel safe on the app.
Public or private collection creation. In a later version, the ability to have multiple curators per collection.
“I’m tired of the onslaught of ads and algorithmic nonsense of Instagram. I just want simple, collection-based, chronological sharing of photos.”
The fate of Pine
Unfortunately, we had to remove pine from the App Store due to exorbitant hosting fees. However, given enough interest we may bring it back to life!
